Options You Have If a Dental Veneer Becomes Loose

Posted on 2/22/2021 by Dr. Amy Nguyen
Options You Have If a Dental Veneer Becomes LooseIf your dental veneer becomes loose or falls off, there is no need to panic. We are always here to help. While porcelain veneers usually have staying power, they still, at times, will become loose or lose their grip. When this happens, call us immediately so we can reattach the tooth, and you can resume your daily activities.

Why Dental Veneers Loosen or Come Off

If you have a problem with bruxism (clenching or grinding of the teeth), the condition can cause your veneers or other restorations to become loose. Should you have this dental condition, we usually suggest that you get a mouth guard or night guard to wear to protect your teeth. Veneers will also come off because a patient uses too much pressure when biting down or eating something too crunchy or hard. Therefore, you need to be cognizant of the foods you eat. Hard and crunchy foods will also damage natural teeth. Therefore, they generally should be avoided.

How to Resolve the Problem

If your veneer comes off, place the tooth in a solid container after you rinse it. Contact our office to schedule an appointment to have the tooth reattached. If the tooth has broken, we will not be able to do much about it except take impressions and have a new veneer made in the lab. If the tooth has not come off but is loose, carefully remove it and, again, place it in a container so we can put it back in place. Usually, you will not have to deal with this type of emergency if you visit us every six months for a dental checkup and cleaning. You should also brush at least twice and day and floss daily. During a checkup, we can check your veneers for stability and take x-rays to make sure there is no decay underneath.

Do you currently have veneers? Have you had a dental checkup and professional cleaning in the last six months? If not, call our office today for an exam and consultation.
