Prophylaxis: What is Involved in a Professional Dental Cleaning?
Posted on 4/26/2021 by Dr. Amy Nguyen
Adults between the ages of 20 and 64 have 3.28 decayed or missing teeth. When it comes to your dental health, prevention is better than cure. That is exactly why the American Dental Association strongly recommends you have your routine dental cleaning every six months.
At Smile Craft Dental, our doctors and Our doctors offer you prophylaxis or professional dental cleaning.
What to Expect During Your Prophylaxis Appointment
Dental cleaning is a purely preventive measure and involves the review of your medical history, an oral exam, and the cleaning of your teeth in case of traces of plaque.
Removal of Calculus
The main aim of prophylaxis is to remove the hardened plaque, also known as calculus or tartar. Calculus is the result of harmful oral bacteria in your mouth and cannot be easily cleaned at home. We may first use an ultrasonic device to dislodge bigger pieces of calculus.
Then we will use fine pointed tools called scalers to scrape off the remaining plaque from between your teeth and beneath your gum line.
Once we have removed all the stuck tartar, we will use an electronic brush to polish your teeth. We may also use flavored granulated toothpaste to effectively deep clean and buff your teeth so that they become smooth and shiny and prevent bacteria from sticking to their surface.
The flossing you will get from us will be more immaculate and will go much deeper than when you floss at home. We will make sure the floss goes deep beneath your gum line and effectively gets rid of plaque and food debris from between your teeth.
Flossing also helps us identify the vulnerable places in your gums that bleed.
Fluoride is a protective mineral and helps to remineralize and strengthen the tooth enamel, making it less susceptible to decay. We may apply a fluoride gel, foam, or solution to the surface of your teeth and let it sit for a while.
We may also apply a fluoride varnish to your teeth which will harden when it dries and provide more protection to your teeth.
Prophylaxis is typically done every six months. However, if you experience any oral problems like yellowing teeth, bleeding gums, or sensitivity, you may schedule an additional appointment with us. Call us at 650-880-1269 so that we can conduct a dental exam and treat your teeth accordingly.
