CEREC Crowns: Benefits and Limitations

Posted on 3/8/2021 by Dr. Amy Nguyen
CEREC Crowns: Benefits and LimitationsCEREC crowns are also known as chairside crowns or same day crowns. The word CEREC is an acronym for Chairside Economic Restorations of Esthetic Ceramics and the technology is used to fabricate same- day crowns so that you do not have to spend any downtime at all without your complete smile.

At Smile Craft Dental, our doctors and Our doctors may recommend CEREC crowns to restore your teeth.
CEREC crowns come with a number of benefits but, like all technology, have few drawbacks as well. Let us find what they are:

Benefits of CEREC Crowns

Some of the major benefits of CEREC crowns which have made them so popular include:

•  CEREC Crowns Immediately Restore the Function of the Tooth: The primary benefit of CEREC crowns is that they restore the form and function of your tooth often just in two hours. During traditional crown placement, you will be required to wear a temporary filling over your weakened tooth for a couple of weeks while you are waiting for your permanent crown to be fabricated in the dental lab. This means you will have to be very careful about the types of food you eat. With CEREC crowns, there is no such concern and you can eat whatever you want on the same day.
•  CEREC Crowns Reduce Risk of Injury: Temporary fillings or crowns that are worn during the interval between the surgery and getting your permanent tooth are quite weak. They also do not offer you a superior fit and can crack or come loose if you eat hard or sticky food. This can allow bacteria to re-contaminate your tooth and spread the infection. Since CEREC crowns are placed on the very same day, this is not a cause of concern.
•  CEREC Crowns Save Money: Temporary crowns or fillings and another appointment to place the permanent crowns means you will have to spend more money to restore your tooth. Since CEREC crowns are created on the same day, they eliminate the expense of temporary crowns and another appointment.

Limitations of CEREC Crowns

CEREC crowns also come with a few limitations:

•  CEREC Crowns Are Not As Strong As Metal Crowns: Although these crowns are made of high-grade porcelain, they are still not as strong as metal-based crowns that can last for over 25 years.
•  Traditional Crown May Fit Better: CEREC crowns require an intraoral camera to take digital impressions. However, these cameras may not be able to effectively detect fractures under the gum line. In such cases, a putty impression and traditional crowns may work better.

If you maintain your oral health and ensure good dietary habits, your CEREC crown can last for 15 years. If you need a tooth restored, schedule an appointment with us at 650-880-1269 and we will check whether a CEREC crown is a good option for you.
