Should You Clean Your Toothbrush Regularly?

Posted on 6/7/2021 by Dr. Amy Nguyen
Should You Clean Your Toothbrush Regularly?Every time you brush your teeth, your mouth remains cleaner. However, your toothbrush remains coated with food debris, mouth bacteria, and toothpaste. Worse off, if you have flu, the virus will also remain on your toothbrush. If you store your toothbrush in the bathroom where bacteria linger in the air, these bacteria usually find their way to your toothbrush and attach to the bristles. For this reason, you should clean your toothbrush regularly.

How to Clean Your Toothbrush?

You should clean your toothbrush after using it to remove plaque, food debris, and mouth bacteria. In addition to rinsing, you should also disinfect your toothbrush from time to time, especially after recovering from the flu, to kill bacteria. To clean your toothbrush, run some hot water over it before and after use to get rid of bacteria between and after brushings. Alternatively, you can disinfect your toothbrush by soaking it in antibacterial mouthwash for two minutes after brushing or a denture cleanser for 3minutes. Other reagents you can use to clean and disinfect your toothbrush include hydrogen peroxide and UV toothbrush sanitizer.

Maintaining Your Toothbrush Clean

Once you disinfect your toothbrush, you can maintain it clean by storing it in hydrogen peroxide to keep bacteria growth at a minimum. You can also use a toothbrush dispenser to hold your toothbrush, and you should keep this dispenser away from the bathroom. Keeping your toothbrush away from the bathroom prevents the toilet plume effect, which harbors bacteria resulting from flushing the toilet, from contaminating your toothbrush. You can also prevent this by storing your toothbrush in a cover or cabinet with the door closed. However, you should clean the covers and cabinets at least biweekly to ensure your toothbrush remains clean. You should also replace your toothbrush after three months to ensure effective brushing.
